If elected, in what ways would you demonstrate support for French Immersion and Core French programs?

I would support strong and sustainable French Immersion programming by promoting the program to families, planning for sufficient space and capacity, and supporting the recruitment and retention of qualified French Immersion teachers. I would also want to ensure families have clear information about their options.

How would you support recruitment and retention of French Immersion teachers?

We need to make Abbotsford an attractive place for French Immersion teachers to work and stay. I would support partnerships with teacher-training programs and universities to strengthen our recruitment pipeline, promote ongoing professional development, and listen directly to our French Immersion teachers about what would improve retention.

If your district does not currently have a French Advisory Committee, how would you support the creation of one and how would you ensure it includes representatives from the appropriate stakeholders, i.e. trustees, administrators, parents, and teachers?

Yes. It makes sense to have the perspectives of the stakeholders most directly affected by French Immersion decisions represented. A French Advisory Committee could provide valuable advice on programming, access, recruitment and long-term planning. The various groups in our district: DPAC, PVP, ATU, and Board of Education could each elect to send a representative or two with a special interest and working knowledge of our French Immersion programs.

If elected, in what ways would you support the expansion of online French second language courses for students who cannot obtain proper access to French Immersion classes through to Grade 12?

Abbotsford already has a strong virtual learning option. If a student cannot access French programming in their local school, I would support expanding online French opportunities where feasible so that students can continue their French education through Grade 12. However, online learning should complement, not replace, strong in-person French Immersion programs.

Anything else you would like to add?

Learning a second language offers significant cognitive, social and professional benefits and can foster greater understanding of other cultures. French is also one of Canada’s two official languages, so providing a strong French Immersion program is an important part of the educational choices we offer families.I am a strong supporter of choice programs because they are an important part of individualized learning. Families and students have different interests, abilities and goals, and we should provide meaningful options that meet those needs. I also believe access to those opportunities should be as equitable as possible across the district. For more information visit www.mikerauch.ca
