Questions from a Voter

1. Why are you running for school board?
I first ran (and was elected) in 2022 after interacting with the schoolboard regarding a district program my kids were interested in looked like it would be discontinued. As we dug deeper, I was frustrated by the Board’s unwillingness to engage and its lack of regard for the perspectives of parents and teachers. I’m a mid sized business owner and a parent, and I wanted to bring my experience to improve accountability and transparency. I want a Board that listens, communicates openly and keeps students and families at the centre of every decision. That’s been my priority over the last four years. I’m hopeful the next elected board will support these goals.
2. What strategy would you use to promote the success and well being of all students?
I will focus on three things: strong foundations, early support and opportunity. Students need strong literacy and numeracy skills, with challenges identified and addressed early. They also need opportunities to discover their strengths through academics, trades, arts, athletics and career programs. I will promote collaboration between families, educators and the community, while using evidence and measurable outcomes to continually improve what we do. I would also like to see our district advocate to the province for some refinement of the 4-point proficiency scale, which is criticized by many parents and students as being unhelpful.
3. Where should increased funding be directed?
Funding should follow student need and have a clear impact on learning. I will prioritize early learning, literacy and numeracy, support for students with additional needs, and attracting and retaining excellent teachers and support staff. We should also protect opportunities such as academic programs, trades, arts and athletics. I am a strong believer in providing broad learning opportunities so every child can stay engaged and reach their maximum potential.
4. What role should parents play in student education?
Parents are essential partners. They know their children better than anyone and can provide valuable insight into their strengths, needs and interests. Every family has their own values and goals for their child’s education. Schools bring professional expertise; but families bring essential knowledge and love of their child. We need both. I would support meaningful parent engagement, open communication and opportunities for parents to contribute to decisions that affect their children and our schools.
